Opel Astra – Class-leading design quality
Lauded as one of the best compact hatchbacks ever manufactured, the Opel Astra took the world by storm when it debuted in 1991. Having been through four generations and facelifts, the new Opel Astra remains a favourite among discerning drivers.
As cities have expanded and become increasingly developed, the need for compact high-performance vehicles that are both affordable and cost-effective to run has increased. This has led to an overabundance of small vehicles hitting the market. However, Astra cars easily beat the competition in almost all categories, including design, power delivery, durability, manoeuvrability, control layout and environmental friendliness. Having been awarded a five-star Euro NCAP rating, these cars are also some of the safest vehicles on the road.
With its unique angular design, the Opel Astra’s V-themed symmetry is both original and classic, giving young drivers a sense of individuality and older drivers the feeling of being distinguished.
CMH Westrand offers a wide range of Opel Astra models that are fun to drive for both long and short distances. Browse our selection of Opel Astra cars now to discover more about these class-leading vehicles or contact us to arrange a test drive.
Astra – Superior power delivery for a compact hatchback
Buying an Astra is a wise decision for anyone who lives in a city or large town. While traffic may be unavoidable, Astra cars reduce the annoyance by providing drivers with a comfortable ride. The Opel Astra may be a compact vehicle, but the limited space has been optimised to create enough room in the cabin for drivers of almost any shape and size. The new Astra’s wheelbase is 71mm longer than previous models and while this may not sound like much, it makes a significant difference to passenger space.
The design cues that create the Astra’s unique exterior appearance are also implemented in the cabin to create a harmony that is apparent in every aspect of the car – both inside and out. The Opel Astra’s sophisticated wing-and-blade design is representative of the car’s superior performance.
The Opel Astra is available in seven different model types:
• Opel Astra 1.4 Essentia – This Astra model is capable of producing 66kW of power at 5 600 revs per minute and 125Nm or torque at 4 000 revs per minute.
• Opel Astra 1.6 Essentia – Fitted with a 1.6 Twinport 16-valve DOHC (double overhead cam) engine, the Opel Astra is more powerful than its 1.4-litre counterpart.
• Opel Astra 1.8 Enjoy – Thanks to its superior 1.8 Ecotec engine, the Opel Astra Enjoy produces 103kW of power at 6 300 revs per minute and 175Nm of torque at 3 800 revs per minute.
• Opel Astra 1.8 AT – The only Astra fitted with automatic transmission, the Astra 1.8 AT offers 103kW at 5 600rpm and 170Nm at 3 800rpm.
• Opel Astra Sport – This Astra is equipped with an Opel Astra 16V 1.8 Ecotec engine, which is capable of producing the same level of power as the 1.8 AT model. The Sport model is also fitted with five-speed manual transmission.
• Opel Astra 1.9 CDTi Enjoy – One of the more powerful models in the Opel Astra range, the CDTi Enjoy can produce 88kW and 280Nm of torque at 2 000rpm.
• Opel Astra Sport 2.0 – This Opel Astra Turbo model is the most powerful vehicle in this range of cars. With its 16-valve DOHC engine, it can produce 147kW of power at 5 600 revs per minute and 262Nm of torque at 4 200 revs per minute.
Astra OPC – Taking success to the next level
Using the Opel Astra as a starting point, the Opel Performance Centre has adapted the vehicle to create the Astra OPC: an enhanced version of the already successful car. Perhaps the most noticeable differences are on the exterior of the vehicle. A honeycomb grille, edgy side sills, central exit exhaust, roof spoiler and lowered suspension elicit a sense of agility on the road.
When you enter the cabin, you’ll notice several internal enhancements:
• superbly designed ergonomic OPC seats
• colour-coordinated décor moulding
• three-spoke leather steering wheel that is responsive and adjustable
• Opel Astra OPC dials that are simultaneously classic and high-tech
• stylish leather-covered gear lever
While much focus has been placed on the aesthetics of the Opel OPC Astra, its performance delivery is arguably its best feature. Its 16-valve four-cylinder engine is capable of producing 177kW of power at 5 600 revs per minute and 320Nm of torque between 2 400 to 5 000 revs per minute. With its superior engine performance, this Opel OPC can reach a top speed of 244 kilometres per hour and can accelerate from zero to 100km per hour in just 6.4 seconds.
The Astra OPC is fitted with an IDSPlus Sport Chassis, which was designed with the primary function of improving performance. Complete with rally class shock absorbers, the Astra OPC is able to tackle uneven terrain with ease. If you want an even more exhilarating driving experience, you can flip the SportSwitch and immediately feel a boost in the vehicle’s steering and throttle performance.
With a combined city and highway consumption of 9.2 litres per 100 kilometres, this Opel Astra model is fuel efficient and meets the Euro4 emission standard, thereby saving you money on petrol and reducing the car’s effect on the environment.
